2023 News
12/8/2023: Cameron is presenting part of his thesis research in the graduate seminar series hosted by the Biological Sciences graduate students. Friday Dec 8th from 11:30-12:30 in the Eureka Centre (Duff Roblin building). Everyone is welcome to learn more about the discoveries one can make when studying parasite life cycles in the lab!
11/9/2023: The lab's nomination for the Lubinsky Memorial Lecture is coming! Bill Severud (South Dakota State University) is giving 2 presentations regarding wildlife disease and in particular brainworm and moose. He is giving a public lecture on Thursday Nov 9 at 7 pm or Friday Nov 10 at 3:00 pm. Everyone is welcome!
9/29/2023: Jillian gave a talk to the Biology department at the University of Winnipeg with a fun title: The Chemical Ecology of Parasite Manipulation: Parasites attack?
9/1/2023: Welcome to new MSc student Joshita Sehgal! We're happy to have you aboard!
8/16/2023: NSERC USRA Maya Derksen presented a poster on a collaborative project with the Assiniboine Park Zoo on the prevalence, mean intensity, and genetic diversity of Trichinella parasites in wolverines. Check out her poster!
7/17/2023: MSc's Cameron and Sidney presented research talks and Jillian presented the Introduction to the Ward Medalist at the annual meeting of the American Society of Parasitologists meeting in Kansas City. They also were part of an All-Canadian team that took first place in parasite trivia (i.e., can you tell I'm super proud?).
5/19/2023: MSc's Cameron and Sidney presented talks and Honours BSc Kael presented a poster at the annual meeting of the Canadian Society of Zoologists. It was the first scientific meeting for all the students, and I would say a success in terms of practicing science communication, networking, and developing their knowledge by attending the talks and posters.
5/1/2023: Welcome to Fong and Maya, our undergraduate research assistants for the summer. Both received NSERC USRA scholarships!
4/14/2023: Kael (Honours BSC 2022-present) successfully defended his thesis in the Honours student symposium. Congratulations for completing what some refer to as a 'mini MSc'.
4/4/2023: Sidney (MSc 2022-present) was awarded a NSERC CGS-M. This is a very competitive and prestigious scholarship and includes top-ups from the University of Manitoba Graduate Studies and Faculty of Science. A big congratulations is in order!
3/17/2023: The lab and friends from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as well as the Assiniboine Park Zoo hosted an outreach event to celebrate International Parasite Day (March 4). Thanks to the students in the Wawatay Program for being enthusiastic participants and putting up with our gross stories. We hope that this spreads awareness about the significance of parasitism in animal health.
3/14/2023: Kael (Honours BSc) presented his research at the Undergraduate Poster Competition on Thurs March 16th from 1-3 pm in the Multipurpose Room, 2nd Floor, University Centre.
1/26/2023: Ash's (MSc 2019-2022) paper confirming both brainworm and muscleworm in deer from Western Manitoba has been accepted for publication by International Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife. Carly (BSc Co-op 2020-2021) was also an author as she generated much of the sequencing data. Way to go team!
1/10/2023: We were awarded funding from the Moose Stewardship Study Program to estimate the diet and parasitism of moose using metabarcoding. Stay tuned for a notice for recruiting either a student or technician to work on this project.
