2022 News
12/7/2022: Sidney (MSc) received the Major G.E.H. Barrett-Hamilton Memorial Scholarship from the Biological Sciences department. Congratulations!
12/6/2022: We are hosting Otto Seppala (University of Innsbruck) for the HPI Seminar series. His talk is entitled "Natural Selection on Quantitative Immune Traits". All are welcome!
12/2/2022: Kael (Honours BSc) received the Shirley Ann Akins Award for best honours proposal. Congratulations!
11/15/2022: Jillian was awarded the W.F. James Chair Professor of Pure and Applied Science for 2022. This will support part of her upcoming research sabbatical.
10/28/2022: The Detwiler lab is hosting Dr. Lien Luong (University of Alberta) for Bio Sci Department seminar. During her visit, she is presenting a fascinating talk on the ecology of fear, discussing parasitology with undergraduates in my Introductory Parasitology course, and meeting with the lab to talk about research collaborations. Looking forward to a fun visit!
9/29/2022: Sidney (MSc 2022-present) and Jillian attended a bootcamp at the Barrier Lake Field Station hosted by the Host-Parasite Interactions (HPI) Research Training Network. It was an intense 1.5 days, but was filled with networking, professional development opportunities, and brainstorming of potential research collaborations with HPI members. Also, we enjoyed gorgeous Fall weather with mountain view - not too shabby for people living in the prairies!
9/7/2022: Undergraduate Aditya Gandhi is gaining some research experience this fall by taking BIOL 4890. He'll be assisting Sidney with processing soil samples collected from transects where we also sampled terrestrial gastropods in our search for nematode parasites of moose.
9/1/2022: Welcome to Sidney who starts her MSc in the lab this fall. Sidney will be continuing the research on moose parasites and their gastropod hosts. Excited to have her join us!
8/9/2022: A book chapter about helminth evolution and diversity co-authored with Dante Zarlenga and Eric Hoberg has been published! See publications page for more information.
7/13/2022: Jillian presented 3 talks at the American Society of Parasitologists annual meeting in College Station, TX, USA. These talks represented the work done primarily by lab alumni Emma, Ash, and Olwyn. Thanks for making me look good!
6/6/2022: Ash (MSc 2019-2022) won the Valdimarsson Award for best Crackerjack Seminar presentation in 2021-2022. She competed against MSc and PhD students in the department, so this was very competitive! Congrats!
5/10/2022: Jillian presented about brainworm to the NBCKC Caribou Health Knowledge Network. Lots of good information was shared from researchers across Canada. Thanks to Susan Kutz for the invitation.
5/9/2022: A few undergraduate research assistants have joined the lab for the summer. Welcome to Kael (honours student), Caitlyn, Ellyse (co-op student), and Elias (a student from University of British Columbia)!
3/28/2022: Kael (honours student) was awarded an Undergraduate Research Award ($7000) to support his stipend during his honours research. Congratulations!
3/25/2022: Ash (MSc 2019-2022) accepted a position as a conservation intern with the Assiniboine Park Conservancy. Fantastic to be graduating and gainfully employed. Woo hoo!
3/16/2022: Ash (MSc 2019-2022) successfully defended her MSc thesis on detecting hotspots of transmission for paraelaphostrongylid nematodes.
3/2/2022: Ash presented some of her MSc thesis research in our graduate student seminar series. Her graphics were fantastic and she was asked many good questions from her fellow graduate students.
2/24/2022: Our paper describing how parasitism and parasite activity affect the chemical profiles of Planorbella pilsbryi snails was published in Molecular & Biochemical Parasitology. Congratulations to Olwyn (postdoc 2019-present) for leading this work!
2/11/2022: The lab participated in the Darwin Day Symposium organized by the Biological Sciences Graduate Student Association. We created a lab poster (see research page) summarizing our current research and Jillian presented the keynote address: "You can run, but you can't hide from Darwin's degenerates".
1/31/2022: Our paper describing evidence of density-dependent prophylaxis in freshwater snails and support for the mechanistic role of oxylipin signaling molecules is published in Frontiers in Immunology. This work involves Olwyn (postdoc, 2019-present) and Chenhua (MSc, 2015-2017) and several collaborators at the University of Manitoba. Thanks to everyone - I'm really proud of this one.
1/25/2022: A student in my course, BIOL 4890, Molecular Ecology of Parasites, published a piece for the Host-Parasite Interactions Training Network blog describing her summer experience https://theparasiteblog.wordpress.com/2022/01/24/examining-the-freshwater-snails-and-trematode-parasites-of-northern-manitoba/. Check out her work along with other students in the HPI group.
1/18/2022: Emma (MSc 2019-2021) has accepted a Research Techician-4 position with Cadham Labs working on COVID-19 genomics. Congratulations!
1/6/2022: Welcome to Cameron! He is starting his MSc in the lab and will likely contribute to our research on host behavioural modifications of parasites and signaling molecules.
